Sharing

Why Share?

Now that your family history records are organized into a PAF file, it is important to share your information. This can be done by submitting to large databases, creating a family web page, etc. By submitting to other databases, you can help others in their research and reduce the duplication of effort. Often, if you share your information, other people are likely to share theirs and assist you in your research.

Where Should You Submit?

The Church recommends submitting to Pedigree Resource File. Submissions to Ancestral File are no longer being accepted and the database will not be updated anymore, although it is still searchable. Those who submit to Pedigree Resource File will have a copy of their files stored for preservation.

There are many other ways to submit or make your family history records available for the benefit of others. A few examples include:

  • making a web page
  • submitting to other web databases, such as Ancestry World Tree or Genealogy.com
  • GEDCOMs to other family members

BEWARE!!
When sharing or submitting your family history records on the internet, NEVER include information on living people without their permission. There have been many cases of identity theft in relation to family history records. Make sure that other family members are also aware of this.

Submitting to Pedigree Resource File

To submit to PRF, do the following:

  1. Export a GEDCOM file from your PAF file.
  2. Once your GEDCOM is created, click here to open FamilySearch.org. Click on Share.
  3. You must be registered with FamilySearch.org. Type in your user name and password, and click sign on. If you are not registered yet, click I need to Register.
  4. Click Share my Genealogy.
  5. To understand this process, click How do I submit my genealogy? and What will be done with my genealogy? on the left panel.
  6. Once you understand what will happen in this process, click I am ready to submit.
  7. Understand and agree to the conditions, then click I accept.
  8. Follow the 3 steps and then click Submit. Your GEDCOM will be uploaded over the internet and will appear within 2-4 months on the next set of PRF CDs.

While it is important to submit your information to the PRF, it will only be beneficial to others if you are adding new information or well-researched and documented information. Search the PRF before submitting to make sure you are not submitting duplicate work.
